Friends share secrets, that’s what keeps them close.
On Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists Season 1 Episode 4, “The Ghost Sonata,” Alison puts her theory to the test and goes searching for Taylor Hotchkiss. Meanwhile, Mona goes on a search of her own, and the Perfectionists contemplate sharing their secrets.
It Spread Like Wildfire
Things pick up right where they off with Alison attempting to convince Mona of her suspicions surrounding Taylor Hotchkiss’ death. After finding out how Taylor supposedly took her own life, it wouldn’t be surprising if other people don’t truly believe she’s gone either. Ali also begins to question how effective Beacon Guard is given everything that’s happened, and wonders what the true intentions are behind watching Beacon Heights’ residents. However, as determined as she is to find Taylor and prove her theories, she’s distracted by things going on in her personal life.
Mona is equally as determined to find BHU’s mystery resident: “Ray Hogadorn.” (This name sounds fake if you ask me, and there’s probably an anagram in there somewhere.). As seen in the promo, Caitlin and Alison show up on her computer’s list of suspects too, so she also has to figure out what the common denominator is between the three of them. For the first time since the show has started, we get to see Mona go off on her own, investigate, and interact with people who aren’t Alison. Not only is she trying to track down this new mystery person, things slowly start to progress with another mystery person in Mona’s life as well. But which one will she choose to focus on?
As for the Perfectionists, they find themselves torn between their secrets and each other. They spend the better part of the episode debating whether or not sharing their secrets will make them closer or completely ruin their recent friendship. And two of the Perfectionists are keeping more secrets than we originally thought, both from each other and other people in their lives.
Although each of the characters have their own individual storylines this week, Ava with her dad and Dylan with his boyfriend (shocking), Caitlin is definitely the one with the most focus. She shares scenes with nearly everyone, and really confides in one of the women in her life.
After receiving a music box, Ava wonders if her father is back in town, but who knows if the box was really from her dad, the killer, or someone else entirely. Flashbacks give us a little bit more insight into her relationship with her dad, and she continues to struggle with all her losses.
While the girls move ahead with the trio’s plan to get more information on their prime suspect, Dylan is at home with Andrew. His primary storyline revolves around his boyfriend, and he doesn’t do much else aside from wrestle with relationship drama, but he does have a couple bonding moments with Ava. It was nice getting to see them start to get along in the same way he and Caitlin did in previous weeks.
This episode definitely advances the plot further along than the last episodes have, and it does a good job of balancing the focus between the Liars (Alison and Mona) and the Perfectionists (Ava, Caitlin, and Dylan). Based off of what unfolds in the last few minutes, the heat is going to be turned up in the upcoming episodes.
Lastly, in the previous episode, the person the Perfectionists ran into in the cabin was supposed to be a surprise, but since they showed us it was Ali and not Taylor in episode stills that were released, the surprise was ruined. There’s a few little moments like that in this episode that’ll be good as long as they don’t spoil it sneak peaks. So I recommend being careful what you read and watch on social media before the episode premieres.
