The Bold Type show-runner weighs in on what’s to come on The Bold Type season 4!
On the season 3 finale of The Bold Type, Jane, Sutton, and Kat arrived at work to find Scarlet in complete chaos with Jacqueline nowhere to be found. We know the season 4 premiere picks up right where they left off, and it’s been such a long wait to find out what exactly is going on at Scarlet.
We interviewed the new showrunner, Wendy Straker Hauser, and asked her what she could tease about the girls’ professional and personal lives in the first half of the new season. Keep reading to find out what she said!
Remediality: What was your biggest challenge stepping up to be the showrunner for this season? Was it different than you expected?
Wendy Straker Hauser: It really just the scope and depth of work. Working not only in the writer’s room on story and character but also with production on casting, wardrobe, locations, the realities of budgets, etc. Add to that one episode that is shooting, another that is in post, another that is being worked on in the writer’s room, and another that is going through a round of studio or network notes, and you can see how hard it gets to keep all the scripts and ideas and characters front and center. It is a group effort and I am grateful for every person involved. I am literally just one of hundreds who help make this happen.
What can you tease about the future of Scarlet?
Last we saw time we saw the gang, Jacqueline had published an issue that wasn’t approved by the board. And now she’s nowhere to be found. Her corporate phone has been turned off and the person left in charge is Patrick. I can’t give too much away but Scarlet will never be the same.
Could talk of a promotion or raise possibly be in Sutton’s future? It would be great to see Sutton and Oliver’s conversation from Season 1 revisited.
We will address this storyline and continue to follow Sutton’s journey in the assistant trenches. A promotion is one of Sutton’s season long goals. But she will hit roadblocks and at one point she might lose everything she ever worked for.
What will Sutton’s primary objective be at Scarlet this season?
To continue working her butt off to prove to herself and get a promotion. Also to maintain a healthy long distance relationship with the love of her life. But how do a 26-year-old and a 41-year-old do that on opposite coasts in different time zones? Besides lots of phone sex, you will have to wait to find out.
What prompted the decision to have Richard move to San Francisco and what can we expect their long-distance relationship to look like?
It’s so realistic that modern couples often find themselves moving around the world for work, so we thought it would be interesting to explore that. The idea that you can love someone and still love yourself and your job is something we wanted to address.
Jane decided to give Ryan another chance after he broke her trust and cheated on her. What impact will this have on their relationship moving forward? Is it something you think they’ll survive?
Jane made a decision to stay in her relationship and forgive Ryan for a mistake he deeply regrets. So now it’s about how to move forward and find their rhythm again. Just like Sutton, Jane finds herself in a complicated romantic situation. It’s not black and white, and Jane is learning how to navigate that, which inevitably leads to growth within herself and within their relationship as a couple.
The trailer for season 4 shows us Jane possibly sleeping with another man (per Ryan’s request?) .What can you tease about that situation?
It’s a story of guilt and regret and how that seeps into a relationship. We really dive into this relationship this season and see a millennial couple struggle to find each other again after a transgression.
Kat is no stranger to using her platform to help others, will she continue to do that? What would you say is her biggest challenge this season?
Definitely. Helping others is part of what makes Kat who she is. Her biggest challenge this season is finding herself separate from Adena so that when they see each other again they will be on equal footing. Perhaps for the very first time
What impact will Adena working at Scarlet have on Kat? Will the two of them be working closely together and/or will we get to see Adena interacting with other Scarlet employees like Sutton, Oliver, and Jacqueline?
In the beginning of the seaso,n Adena is off on assignment, but when she comes back she will work with Jacqueline and Kat. Oliver will also play a role helping Kat through a tough moment that involves Adena.
What upcoming episode are you most excited for fans to see? And what’s been your favorite episode of the show so far?
I’ve loved them all. 404 is sexy and fun. 405 is really emotional in a way that surprised me. 406 pushing all boundaries. And those are just a few. It’s a great season!
Thank you Wendy for taking the time to tease what’s to come on The Bold Type Season 4, and congrats on your first season premiere as showrunner!
