This is exactly the kind of fun, heartwarming episode we need at a time like this.
On The Bold Type Season 4 Episode 9, “5, 6, 7, 8,” the girls go out for Sutton’s bachelorette party, but they all have other things on their mind. Meanwhile, Jacqueline continues seeing Miles, but things get more complicated when Ian comes home.
The Bachelorette Party
After making the decision to move up the wedding and move to San Fransisco, Sutton now has to tell Jane and Kat, and as you’d expect, it isn’t easy. In fact, she tries to tell them like 3 times before it actually happens, which is both hilarious and frustrating to watch. On top of having to break the news to the girls, she also overhears a tense conversation between Oliver and Jacqueline that derails her plans for the night. And by the end of the episode, it looks like Sutton will have 3 very different looking futures to choose from.
Things are still a little tense between Jane and Ryan, and after having another one of her dreams about him, she really struggles to let the past go and can’t shake the feeling he’s lying to her about something. (This is just a theory, but I wonder if the reason Ryan is wearing scrubs in her repetitive dream has something to do with Dr. Ben and her possibly regretting her decision not to choose him.) During Sutton’s bachelorette party, Jane has an interesting conversation with a dancer that sends her spinning a little bit. She later has to juggle some good news while also facing a devastating realization. All I’ll say about this is: Finally! Yikes. And Katie Stevens is phenomenal.
As shown in a sneak peek, Kat confronts RJ about the board’s decision to not allow Adena’s art to be published, and he’s more short tempered with her than usual. After making it clear that the topic wasn’t up for debate, Kat gets suspicious and has a theory about why RJ rejected the collage. Once she tells Adena what happened, Adena begins to look into it and discovers something really disappointing. This leads to Kat doing something risky, and Richard warns her it could result in big consequences if she gets caught. For those wondering if Adena is in the episode, unfortunately no. However, her and Kat do text throughout the episode and she’s confirmed to be in the finale.
As mentioned above, Ian comes home unexpectedly and throws Jacqueline off her game a little bit, and later on they finally have a talk about their marriage and what happened.
Even though theres’s a lot going on during the bachelorette party and Sutton, Jane, and Kat are all a little bit distracted, they still celebrate and have a lot of fun throughout the night. There’s dancing, sweet moments between Sutton/Oliver and Jane/Jacqueline, and a lot of scenes that really cement how great the trio’s friendship is. Expect plenty of happy tears, sad tears, and laughing so hard you cry tears.
The Bold Type Season 4 Episode 9 did an incredible job at setting up the mid-season finale, and I’m really excited (and nervous) to see how everything is going to play out. Each of the girls’ storylines take twists and turns throughout the episode, and they all leave off on cliffhangers.
The episode was equal parts funny and dramatic, and overall was just written really well. Nothing felt forced, each person felt very true to their character, and the girls’ stories all flowed nicely together. Between Jane, Sutton, and Kat dancing, the funny one-liners, the heartwarming moments, and the cohesive storylines, this might actually be my favorite episode of the season (so far). My only complaint was that Adena wasn’t in the episode, though I do appreciate her being consistently mentioned and that she’ll be in the finale, it’s just hard to justify her not even making an appearance when we’re 9 episodes in and she’s only been in 2 of them. That being said, I’m really looking forward to what happens next, and depending on how things unfold, the second half the season could look very different.
